It's true that I always feel a special connection with my couples, but when I arrived to the Reynolds' family home on that misty February morning, I knew that there this was a serendipitous match. Hannah is the oldest of 4 - like me. She was homeschooled, and a musician in a family of musicians - like me. From the designer of our wedding gowns to the fact that her baby brother's collected Lord of the Rings swords - there are too many similarities to name. Watching the beaming pride of Hannah's 3 brothers, the tender connection between her and her parents, and the deep, peaceful love she shared with George made me so thankful to be a part of this perfect day. We spent an hour taking photos in the stunning and historical Richmond Main Street Station, and the ceremony and reception were held in the unique Richmond Boathouse. After a rich and meaningful ceremony, dinner, and the most tear-inducing toasts I've ever witnessed, Hannah, George, and their family and friends danced the night away. Congratulations, you two! Being a part of your day was an unforgettable experience, and I wish you a lifetime of peace and deep joy.
The Fox home was warm and so full of love! Little Zeke and baby Thea are adorable and so well cared for. Thank you for welcoming into your home to capture these sweet moments, it was a joy!! <3
When I first met with Brittany almost 2 years ago, I knew there was something special about this couple. Brittany is genuinely one of the kindest and most caring people I know. And when I met Chris at their engagement session, I could see why she was drawn to him. Together are goofy, selfless, and TOTALLY in love. Their wedding day was beautiful from beginning to end. One of my favorite things about their day was their inclusion of the kids - seeing their family and friends show up and celebrate with them - kids in tow - is proof of how well Chris and Brittany are loved. The fall colors, the joyful faces, the donuts, and the dancing...I loved it all!! Thank you for letting us be a part of your timeless day, guys. Enjoy!! <3
I've gotten to know Abbie and Scott over the past couple of years - maternity, newborn, engagement, family photos - and what has always come to the surface is their love for each other and their devotion to family. These two would do anything for each other or for their boys, and their wedding day was a beautiful reflection of that. Held at the gorgeous Signature at West Neck during the height of October, Abbie and Scott vowed to love and honor each other and their children until death. It was a totally breathtaking occasion. Then, to the smooth rhythms of Cheap Thrills, they danced the night away. Congratulations Abbie and Scott, it has been an awesome ride!! <3
Love seems so natural for Morgan and Owen. When I watch them together, it reminds me that true love blooms from friendship, with the strength and beauty of a flowering tree. Vibrant, steadfast, and tender...with roots that trickle deep into the earth. It was almost overwhelming to see how many people have been impacted by Morgan and Owen - individually and as a couple. Their ceremony took place under a sapphire blue October sky, with a lake glittering to the left and a flame of autumn colors framing the crowd. Owen and Morgan took Holy Communion and said their vows with smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. When the dance floor opened after the ceremony, there was a literal stampede of beaming faces - SO ready to dance in celebration of the bright light of Morgan and Owen's love. The joyful chaos of dancing and laughing and happy tears was testament to the pure goodness that this couple brings to their world. Thank you for letting me witness your day, you two. What a privilege.

They met on a phone interview. Katie talked a lot. Matt listened - and probably smiled a sheepish smile that meant he liked what he was hearing. Katie's a girl who knows what she wants and what she believes, Matt is a guy who will work hard for what he wants and - more importantly - for the people he loves. October 7th, 2017 went down in the books as a glorious, glam, unforgettable celebration of true love. Katie's un-dimmable smile and sleek, Jennifer Aniston look + Matt's all-day heart eyes melted everyone there. Twinkling lights, raw oysters, and an insane dance party made the little restaurant poised on the marina pulse with magic and energy well into the night. Matt and Katie are well loved. They started their eternity together filled with passion and surrounded by family and dear friends. Congrats, guys. Enjoy reliving your day <3
Kindness. That was the flavor of the day on September 23rd, 2017. On the steps of the beautiful Obici House in Suffolk, Virginia, Jess and Ricky vowed to love each other for the rest of their lives. The day was warm, the water was sparkling, and the genuine smiles were punctuated by happy tears. Ricky thoughtfully requested every photo he knew his mom would want for the scrapbook, the best man brought out his brother's baby blankie during his toast, and Jess's mom gave my sister and I bottles of leftover wine. I mean...really? This family is so selfless and full of the best kind of humor. It was a joy to notice their thoughtfulness and capture the flawless beauty of their happy faces. Congratulations guys, we wish you 100 more years of happy tears.
Norfolk is a city with a special energy. It is always humming with possibility - maybe that has something to do with its bustling sea port, dotted with masts and rigging that are visible from almost any block in the city. On Saturday, September 9th, the Norfolk sky was brilliantly blue and the air was warm and promising. When Evin and I knocked on Morgan's door in the Hilton, we were met with relaxed, sunny smiles and a wall of windows overlooking the water. From one corner, we could see the "Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center" which is where Morgan would be saying her vows later that day. Excitement spilled from everyones faces as they put finishing touches on hair and makeup and sipped champagne.
The ceremony and the reception were both held at the Half Moone. The ceremony was poignant and simple - a sweet embrace and blessing as each set of parents welcomed a new child, and sincere, tearful vows. The reception was the liveliest I've seen in a while! There were s'mores, cigars on the balcony, and endless dancing.
You can tell a lot about a couple by the people who come to celebrate their union, and Chris and Morgan's celebration was filled with fun, interesting, genuine people who wished them well and celebrated past midnight. Congratulations, you guys! It was an honor and SO MUCH FUN to celebrate and capture your wedding.
"Hey Bree! So sorry my makeup took a little longer than expected, but I'm on the way" I read Lynn's text on the afternoon of her wedding day and smiled. "No problem!!" I try to make sure that brides know that the schedule revolves around them - no one is getting married until the bride is good and ready! Evin, my sister/second-shooter, and I, found plenty to do in the meantime. Decluttering the bridal room, photographing the rose and hydrangea bouquets, which had just been delivered, and making our game-plan for the day. When Lynn arrived, she was radiant. Starbacks in hand and bronzer shimmering, she was glowing and SO READY for the day - HER day. I don't know that I've ever met a more joyous and supportive wedding party. Each maid and groomsmen was full of cheery banter and jaunty poses - a photographer's dream! Lynn and Kellen clasped hands around a corner of the old church (don't peek!) and each smiled from ear to ear as they bowed their heads together - "Bless this day."
A classic but fun aesthetic, quirky yet tender vibe, and romantic hues and conversation characterized the day from beginning to end. The one-of-a-kind affection that Lynn and Kellen have for each other was abundantly clear. After the ceremony Kellen offered to carry Lynn's "pinchy" shoes, and during his dad's blessing before dinner, Kellen quietly tapped his bride on the wrist and she clasped his hand. There was a subtle sweetness that bespoke longevity in the way they related to each other - something that is rare and touching in a couple. I was honored to witness the marriage of these two - cheers to the newest Becker couple! I hope you enjoy viewing these photos as much as I enjoyed taking them <3
It was pouring rain the morning I got to the Soper's house. Adam and Ashley warmly greeted me with the tired excitement of new parents, and introduced me to beautiful baby Finley - 7 days old. She was intrigued by the equipment and attention but finally gave in and drifted off to sleep under the lights. She is the sweetest thing and I loved my time with her! <3
Meet Morgan and Owen. They both have classic dark features. Morgan has a big, beautiful smile, and Owen has twinkly eyes and a full beard. They laugh a lot (which, as a photographer, I love!) and have a unique relationship with deep roots. In their down time, they can be found riding bikes, exploring new places, or eating ice cream and pizza. I can't wait to photograph their big day in October - it's sure to be as unique and beautiful as they are! In the meantime, enjoy a few of their engagement photos <3
I've known Melanie and her family for 6+ years now...Mel and Josiah were in my wedding in 2012, and Josh and I love Josiah as if he were our own nephew! We were so excited to welcome baby Phineas to the world, and watching Josiah come to love his new little brother has warmed my heart so much. Melanie is a glowing mother and I'm so happy for her growing family. Here are some in-home newborn photos we took when little Phin was a week old. Love you guys <3
Abbie and Scott are getting married in just a couple of months, and we got their engagement photos in on a beautiful spring day a couple of weeks ago. They are a great match - chill, fun, and very photogenic :D Congrats, guys! Can't wait to capture your big day!!
I've had the honor of knowing Felicia and Samayah for a couple of years. Felicia is nothing if not inspiring. Her down to earth personality, easy sense of humor, and relentless dedication to her family and her dreams are just....WOW. This month Felicia graduates from Old Dominion University, and her family is moving to Orlando where Felicia will take a management job with none other than DISNEY. In celebration of her accomplishments, we had a little photo shoot last week! Enjoy!
Every couple has a story, and one of my passions is capturing a little bit of that story so that they can remember and retell it forever. Lily and Brandon met at Regent University and share a love of the law. They are both tall and striking, and madly in love! Seeing their sweet/goofy/sincere interactions made me smile behind the camera. I loved our time together and I can't wait to see what the future holds for them!
If you've ever wondered about how to prep for maternity photos, look no further! Ericka and Eric's maternity shoot inspired me to answer some questions about the perfect pregnancy photo session, because, well, their session was perfect.
1. When is the right time to schedule maternity photos?
Answer: between 28 and 35 weeks! This is the ideal time because your bump is big and beautiful, but you don't yet feel like an apple on stilts. (Speaking from experience here.)
2. What is the best location for maternity photos?
Answer: Wherever you feel most comfortable! By the water, in the woods, or downtown...some of my favorite shoots are even done in the living room, or the new baby's nursery, with the mama wearing comfy clothes and drinking a hot drink.
3. Do I need to bring any props?
Answer: Totally up to you! As a photographer I will gladly incorporate your ideas into our collaboration, but if you don't have any props I am happy to take the creative lead and capture moments that suit your family!
4. What should I wear?
Answer: Go simple - lots of neutrals with maybe one pop of color. Make sure that you and the other participants of your shoot are not too "matchy matchy." You don't even have to be wearing any of the same colors, as long as your outfits complement one another's. Comfort is also key - the camera can sense when you don't feel at ease!
5. What kind of poses will we do?
Answer: This has a lot to do with your particular photographer's style and comfort zone, so obviously poses can vary. But I will answer for myself: I like to see you and your spouse and/or other children looking super comfortable and natural. I always aim to take 1 or 2 "cheese" pictures - you know, one to give to the grandmas and aunties - but for the most part I will ask you to interact, talk about what you love and what you're excited about, and capture you doing it. Bottom line - I want to see the emotion that fuels your family come to life on camera.
And that's what you need to know! A big thank you to Ericka and Eric for demonstrating the perfect session and for being such generally cool people. Families like yours make my job so fun!
I've known Lauren and Jeremy now for a while through a mutual friend, and I'm really excited to see this awesome couple transition into parenthood! They had a connection to New Earth Farm, which is where we did this chilly maternity session. It was so fun exploring the farm and finding great locations with them. Congratulations, you two - baby Maloney is so blessed!
It's a little intimidating to photograph people you're close to - but also really special! Thanks for the great session Chan and Elina - and Ruthie! You guys have such a sweet relationship and it is fun to see it come to life on camera. I love you all!
It's so cool when a couple has a location that's special to THEM...Christina told me that this park in Pungo was her and Sheldon's "spot" - that they had come here all throughout their dating and engaged relationship. Now, they are celebrating 2 years of marriage! But to be honest, their love and sparkling, vibrant relationship made this session feel just like an engagement session. They must be doing something right!! Congrats, guys!
This adventure-chasing couple wanted to commemorate their move to California with a photoshoot at a couple of their favorite VA Beach locations. I loved their energy and love for each other, and the spots they chose were gorgeous!! Congratulations on your upcoming move, Shannon and Steve, and best of luck on all your future adventures!!
